The hummingbird spends its entire waking life at the precise moment before the flower closes.
A pendant necklace in 18K yellow gold vermeil with sterling silver. A sculpted hummingbird with mint synthetic body hovers above a coral pink lotus flower, its beak suspended at a single rose-cut garnet briolette — a single drop of nectar, held at the instant before release.
Pendant height 42mm. Chain: fine cable link, 18 inches. Made to order in 6–8 weeks.
The lotus — Nelumbo nucifera — grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom. In Buddhist and Hindu traditions it is the symbol of enlightenment: beauty that does not carry the conditions of its origin on its face. The lotus does not look like mud. It looks like morning.
The garnet briolette suspended at the hummingbird's beak is the single drop — nectar, dew, the first sweetness of the day before the sun burns the morning away.
This piece is about the earliest hour: the quality of light and possibility that exists specifically in the first twenty minutes after dawn, before the weight of the day asserts itself. A private moment. What the hummingbird knows and carries forward into the work of the day.
The mint synthetic body is set separately from the metal casting, fitted into the form after the gold vermeil work is complete. The synthetic material was chosen for its color stability — natural stones in this color range tend toward inconsistency across pieces; the synthetic holds the mint tone exactly, which matters for a piece where the color relationship between the bird, the lotus, and the garnet is deliberate.
The lotus flower is a separate casting in coral pink with individual gold-outlined petals. The two castings — bird and flower — are joined at the composition point, not cast as one. This allows each element to be finished independently before assembly.
The garnet briolette is natural, faceted, and suspended on a fine gold wire from the base of the pendant. Pendant height: 42mm. Chain: fine cable link, 18 inches, in gold vermeil over sterling.
The pendant measures 42mm in height. On an 18-inch chain it rests at the décolletage where the hummingbird and lotus form a complete composition at the center of the chest. The garnet briolette hangs below the lotus, adding approximately 8mm of movement beneath the fixed form. The piece is light on the body — this is intentional.
Palette
The garment should be in one of the piece's own tones, or white.
Coral pink and warm peach to echo the lotus directly
Mint green to answer the bird's body
Blush and ivory as neutral ground that allows the full composition to read
Nothing dark. Nothing saturated enough to pull the eye from the pendant.
In Fabric
Silk chiffon, fine cotton, linen voile, and soft jersey. The lightest possible fabrics — this piece belongs to the hours before the day becomes heavy. Heavy fabrics change what it is.
How to Wear It
A silk slip dress in blush or ivory, the pendant resting against the décolletage. For brunch, for the first warm afternoon, for the day that starts simply.
A soft linen co-ord in warm peach or coral — the lotus will find its palette partner in the fabric. The piece reads as if it emerged from the outfit rather than being placed on top of it.
A flat leather slide or simple sandal. A small gold hoop at the ear — not competing. Nothing at the wrist. This is a morning piece, not an evening piece. Wear it in the hours it was made for.
